Colonization

Equestria began as nothing more than a barren island in the middle of a great ocean. Inhabited only by indigenous horses, it was held no resources of it's own. It was first recorded by humans in January 2018, but settlers only came along in February of that year. Settlers came for many reasons, in search of new lives, labour, or to escape from tyranny in the old world. They brought with them livestock, seeds, and saplings before setting up a mining operation to make the land self-sustainable without import. Merely a week after settlers first landed, the only resources necessary to import were luxuries and other precious items.

Nationalization

As agriculture, fishing, and mining grew, many colonists realized the need for actual regulation and leadership to promote free trade and also protect the defenseless commoners from invasion. Individuals like Philip Harker, Kyle, and Geoffrey were among the first to lay down plans for an inclusive, mighty, and prosperous state. These early documents included a central government with a constitution and a flag. On 28 February 2018, the 1st Equestrian National Congress ratified the Constitution and the Republic of Equestria was born as a unitary democratic republic. Philip Harker was unanimously elected President.

Tension Grows

Many of the early settlers in Equestria were subjects of the Kings under the Mountain, an absolute monarchy that maintained control of much of the old world. King Grant I saw Equestria as more of a rival than an ally, and desired the island and it's riches for his own. He would have launched a full blown invasion the moment the constitution was ratified, but he had no justification for war. The Kings had no choice but to wait.

Before Constitution Day on 28 February, Fort Mustang was being constructed on the West coast of the island, authorized by Congress for defence purposes. Additionally, Equestria had signed the Treaty of the Coltalition with Aaron Comeau, David Van Herpt, and Cameron Shih which guarenteed mutual defence against an attack from the Kings Under the Mountain. Grant I was outraged at this and immediately began planning a surprise attack.
